Functions of Cup Pigs In Oil ad Gas Pipelines

Cleaning

Cup pigs are primarily working in cleaning pipelines, removing dirt, scale, wax, and other debris accumulated inside the pipe. This cleaning is crucial for preventing blockages and maintaining smooth flow of oil or gas. The cups on the pig form a tight seal against the pipe walls, scraping and pushing debris along as they travel through the pipeline.

Inspection

While the basic cup pigs are used for cleaning, some are equipped with sensors and gauges that allow for inspection activities. These “smart pigs” can assess the condition of the pipeline, including checking for corrosion, pitting, or other forms of wear that could potentially compromise the pipeline’s integrity.

Dewatering and Drying

After hydrostatic testing or pipeline repairs, cup pigs are working in removing water in the pipe. This is crucial for preventing corrosion and preparing the pipeline for the transportation of oil or gas. Cup pigs push water out, effectively drying the pipeline.

Pigging Process

1. Planning and Preparation
Before the pigging operation begins, detailed planning is necessary. Additionally, operators must configure the pipeline’s inlets and outlets correctly to ensure the pig can enter and exit without obstructions.

2. Pig Insertion
Operators insert the pig into a section of the pipeline known as a pig launcher—a specialized chamber designed for the safe and efficient insertion of the pig into the pipeline. Typically, the launcher is equipped with a door that operators can securely close to withstand pipeline pressure after inserting the pig.

3. Pig Propulsion
Once the pig is in the pipeline, it is propelled forward by the pressure of the product flowing in the pipeline. In some cases, pumps or other pressure sources may be used to move the pig. The pig travels along the pipeline, conforming to its bends and diameter changes, driven by the flow of the medium it is cleaning or inspecting.

4. Cleaning or Inspection
As the pig travels through the pipeline, it performs its designated tasks:
Cleaning pigs scrape and push debris such as scale, wax, or other deposits along the pipeline. Brushes or blades attached to the pig help in effectively removing these materials.

5. Pig Receiving
At the end of its journey, the pig arrives at a pig receiver—a chamber similar to the launcher but used for safely removing the pig from the pipeline.
